Stroll across the lawn to our Carolina Backcountry Homestead. This recreated homestead plays host to our living history events. Included in our Homestead are a log cabin, settler’s house, smokehouse, wood barn, commissary (storehouse), loomhouse, outhouse, blacksmith shop, vegetable and herb gardens, outdoor kitchen, and bread oven. The Settler’s house and Commissary are original buildings built between 1812 and 1836. The museum had the other buildings in the Carolina Backcountry Homestead constructed from materials salvaged from derelict buildings located within Sumter County.

One of our most popular events are our free Living History Days three times a year! We have costumed interpreters plying their crafts – black smithing, woodworking, outdoor cooking, spinning and weaving, as well as children’s crafts and games from circa 1800, and we are thrilled that these events are offered free of charge. Donations are always appreciated.
